CAN I ASK YOU A PERSONAL QUESTION?
Chinese & German Artists Workshop Art Exhibition
2014 Chengdu, China
It started dialogue between Chinese&German artists with 9 questions which are closely related to artists' motivation of artistic creation. Artists will discuss in which private motivation and changing of created thought could impact the artistic creation under different context and culture.
The communication process was initiated by the following questions:
- What did move you mostly in your art / in your artistic life?
- What do you have to ignore to do your art?
Was there something that you had to give up to follow your art?
- What about the different voices in yourself? Do you have them?
- Which impact has the body, the physicalness in your art?
- What is art in and for your family?
- What does it mean for your country?
- What is your art in history?
- Do you see a borderline between modern art and traditional art of your country in your art works?
- Where do you go when you can't sleep?
This workshop is supported by The Office of Cultural Affairs Hamburg (Kulturbehörde Hamburg) and Art Museum of Sichuan University. Curated by Stephanie Fenner and Dagmar Rauwald, organized by Jody Huang, nine artists from China and Germany participated in this project building an exhibition together in the Sichuan University Museum in Chengdu, China.
The workshop follows 6 steps :
Step 1: Ask questions
July 2014. According to the subject:"Can I ask you a personal question?", curator set up 9 questions.Thoese questions are strongly related to the artistic creation, including elements as "body","inside voice", "borderline"," lose sleep", "family", "country" etc
Step 2: Answering
August 2014. After received the 9 questions, all artists chose the questions interested them the most by their own. The answer should be in any kind of art form( sketch, painting, installation, video, scuplture...). Artists could chose 1 question, or answer the 9 questions by 1 art work.
Step 4: Meeting in real life
Middle of September. German artists arrive in Chengdu, meet Chinese artists. Each artists would show which question do they chose, what is the answer, and explain why.
Step 6: Exhibition
29th September 2014. All German & Chinese artists will desplay their art work in museum. Including the answers to questions, the interpretations, and the art work of in-residence.
Step 3: Interpretaion
End of August 2014. German artists chose 1 or few Chinese artists' art work, interpreted it with any kind of art form( sketch, painting, installation, video, scuplture...). Before the first meeting in real life, German artists start to give imaginary description and profile of Chinese artists and their art works.
Step 5: Creation and public
After meeting, artists will build their own work space,and an "office area" in Art Museum of Sichuan University. They will work in museum, discuss together in "office area". During this time, museum is open to public, audience could come to visit, communicate with artists. In this case, audience could become part of the artists dialouge.
